The Ultimate Guide to the Malta-Gozo Ferry (Timetables, Prices, & Hidden Hacks)

7 min read·

Crossing the channel from Malta to Gozo is one of the simplest journeys in the Mediterranean — a short hop between two very different islands. But the small logistical details (which port, which ferry, when to buy your ticket) are where most first-time visitors lose an hour standing in the sun at the wrong terminal. This is the definitive local guide to making the transition seamless, whether you're driving a hire car off the ramp at Ċirkewwa or stepping straight off the Valletta fast ferry with just a backpack.

How to Get to Gozo: Choosing Your Ferry Route

There are two ways to make the crossing, and how to get to Gozo depends almost entirely on where you're staying in Malta. If you're based in the north (Mellieħa, St Paul's Bay, Buġibba) the Ċirkewwa car ferry is on your doorstep. If you're staying in Valletta, Sliema or anywhere along the harbour, the Virtu fast ferry from the Grand Harbour will save you the long bus ride up the island.

1. The Ċirkewwa Car & Passenger Ferry (Gozo Channel)

Operated by Gozo Channel, this is the main Gozo ferry: a workhorse roll-on roll-off service running from Ċirkewwa terminal at the very northern tip of Malta to Mġarr Harbour on Gozo. It runs 24 hours a day, carries cars, vans, motorbikes and bicycles as well as foot passengers, and the crossing takes roughly 20–25 minutes. During peak summer hours boats depart every 45 minutes; off-peak and overnight it drops to hourly.

2. The Valletta to Gozo Ferry (Virtu Fast Ferry / Gozo Highspeed)

The Valletta to Gozo ferry is the smarter choice for travellers without a car. Operated by Virtu Ferries and Gozo Highspeed, these catamarans depart from the Grand Harbour in Valletta and reach Mġarr in about 45 minutes — barely longer than the bus ride to Ċirkewwa would take you on its own. They are strictly foot-passenger only, run roughly every 90 minutes during the day, and are the only realistic option for a true day-trip from Valletta.

Malta to Gozo Ferry Timetable & Ticket Prices

The Malta to Gozo ferry timetable changes seasonally, so always double-check on the operator's site the night before you travel. The crucial quirk to know about the Ċirkewwa route: you only pay when leaving Gozo, never on the way in. You walk or drive straight onto the boat at Ċirkewwa without a ticket, and buy a return at Mġarr before boarding back. The Valletta fast ferry, by contrast, is ticketed in both directions.

Getting Around Gozo Without a Car

Getting around Gozo is genuinely easy once you walk off the ferry at Mġarr Harbour — even without a hire car. The island is small (just 14km end-to-end), and the bus terminal, taxi rank and Hop On Hop Off stop are all within 30 seconds of the terminal exit. Here are the three options locals actually recommend, in order of best value.

  • The Public Bus Network: Tallinja buses fan out from Mġarr to Victoria (the central hub) and onward to every village and beach on the island. Routes 301, 303, 322 and 323 leave from the bays directly outside the terminal. A single fare is €2.50 in summer and €1.50 in winter, or use a Tallinja card for €0.75 per ride.
  • The Gozo Hop On Hop Off Bus: The Gozo Hop On Hop Off bus parks right outside the terminal exit and is the fastest way to see the island's headline sights — Cittadella, Dwejra, Ramla Bay, Xagħra — in a single day. Buses loop continuously, so you jump off, explore, and grab the next one. Ideal for travellers short on time who don't want to decode bus timetables.
  • Ride-Hailing & E-Cabs: Both Bolt and eCabs operate across Gozo, and Uber has limited coverage. A ride from Mġarr to Victoria runs around €7–9, and to the far side of the island (say, San Lawrenz or Marsalforn) about €12–15. Useful for late evenings when buses thin out, or when you want a direct hop to a specific village.

Planning Your Crossing

In peak summer (mid-July to late August) the Ċirkewwa terminal can back up with cars for two or three ferry departures — arrive 45 minutes early if you're driving. Foot passengers almost never wait. On the Valletta side, the fast ferry rarely sells out except on weekends, but booking online the day before is cheaper than buying at the kiosk. And one more local tip: the cheapest sunset of your life is the 7pm Ċirkewwa crossing in June, with the cliffs of Comino glowing pink off the starboard rail.
